Reverend Isaac Russell

I too am trying to find out more about the Reverend Isaac Russell – I suspect he may be related to my family.

My first cousin once removed in Limerick, Ireland is called Ann Holliday. She has in her possession a “sampler” which was done by our ancestor, also called Ann Holliday in the family home in Cumberland in 1830 when she was about 12. The sampler shows a picture of Spilsby School, and is clearly copied from the original picture of the school done in 1829 - a copy of which I have seen on the internet.

This however posed a question – how did a 12 year old girl in Cumberland in 1830 get to see that picture of Spilsby School? It is possible, although highly unlikely I would have thought, that she attended the school herself. Given the travelling time and difficulty involved in getting from west Cumberland to deepest rural Lincolnshire, one would ask why this small remote school would have been chosen.

Then I discovered that the master of Spilsby School at the time was the Reverend Isaac Russell. Ann Holliday’s mother was born Sarah Russell, and her grandfather was ….. Isaac Russell. It’s not the same man, because this Isaac Russell was a miller who lived in Cumberland and died there 1813. But it is quite possible that the Reverend Isaac Russell is related to this family.

I haven’t found him yet – as far as I know he isn’t a brother to Sarah Russell and therefore may not be an uncle to Ann Holliday – but I think he SHOULD be. After all, the practice at the time would be to name the eldest boy after the father. So I’ll continue to try to make the connection.

In the meantime I’d be grateful for any information which anyone might have about your Reverend Isaac Russell.

My Uncle Michael Doyle from Wicklow Ireland died of peritonitis in Holmescroft, Louth Lincolnshire on June 8 1943 aged 34. He had been living at 1 Cavendish Road, Skegness.

His brother James Doyle was last seen at his funeral at this time. He had been resident at the Hostel, Great Steeping, Spilsby.

I have read about the airbase there for Bomber Command and I wonder was he perhaps connected with this?

This information has just come to light from the death certificate FD930933. His family would be pleased to know more of this if possible.

Samuel Harris - Old Bolingbroke

I have found my great grandfather SAMUEL HARRIS on the 1911 census. He is living with his family in Old Bolingbroke and gives his occupation as a self employed fish dealer. He is also in Kelly's directory. The family appear to have moved here from Sutterton.

I am not familiar with this part of the country but am I right in thinking that he probably would have worked his business from Spilsby market town? If that is right then could you tell me whether there are any photos available of Spilsby trades people c 1911?

The other query I have is where might he have bought the fish from? Would he have had to some kind of licence (someone mentioned that he may have sold the fish from a barrow) and where might he have stored the fish?

My name is Margaret Briese from Australia, and have stumbled across your site whilst doing some family history research on the Walker – Hollis family. I noticed a post from Jenny Walker from the 04/07/2009 – this is exactly my branch of the family!!

I am descended from Bertie Peregrine Walker who is my great grandfather. My grandmother (his youngest daughter) is still alive and very keen to know of the Walker family and if in fact it has survived in England or not.

J A Clay

I have a photograph / post card of a gentleman who signs himself "J A CLAY" the identity of whom I am seeking to establish.

The Post Card was posted by Royal Mail in 1935 from Skegness and the picture is in the style of a celebrity / singer - the kind of photograph that might be sent by a performer to his fans.  He may have been associated with, or performing at, the Derbyshire Miner's Holiday Camp.

There is a chance that the gentleman's name may have been Jackson Clay.

Are you aware please of a body, society or organisation which may have archives or records that may help me out with my quest please?

Maria Flichet Short

Hello. My name is Isabelle Flichet,  I am a Frenchwomen and I live in the Meadows, Paris.

I am looking into my family history and I have found a possible reference to my family on an international site at
genealogy-ancestors.com

The site tells me that a woman born at Spilsby in 1893 was called Maria Flichet Short. Since this woman bears my family name I was wondering if she had any known connection to France.

Unfortunately I no more information than that.

Note from webmaster: The name may have been anglicised to Fletcher. The double-barrelled surname may indicate a fairly well-off family since only wealthy brides (from wealthy families with no sons) usually kept their family name.

Florence Joanna Betts

I wonder if any of your members could kindly help me please?

My ancestor Florence Joanna Betts was born in Spilsby. The entry in the ‘Where and When born’ column of her birth certificate shows -

10 September 1881 Ashby Road Spilsby R.S.W.

Any idea what the R.S.W. stands for please?

Her mother is Eliza Ann Betts (no further details known)

Florence is illegitimate and does not have a father listed on her Birth Certificate. Family ‘Folklore’ is that her father was a local Solicitor. Does anyone have any suggestions?

By the Census in 1891 she is living with Joseph and Mary Jackson in Downham Market, Norfolk. By 1901 the family is in Winthorpe (Skegness). She was always known to the family as Florence Johanna Jackson. The Jackson may have links to Ulceby (Alford)

The Gables Workhouse, the Brown Family and the Bonner Family

One of my students has traced her mother - a May Brown, who was born 25/02/1913 at The Gables, Hundleby.

May's mother was Alice Maud Brown, a general domestic servant of Alford, though the father's name has been left blank on May's birth certificate.

The father may have been a Robert Bonner, born in Alford of a farming family who died in WW1. The only Robert Bonner on the CWGC site that fits is only remembered on the Menin Gate (Private 14763 died 05/07/1915 of the Dorsetshire Regiment). This tallies with details held that the father's body was never found for proper burial.

Does anyone have details about the workhouse, or the family of Alice Maud Brown, or the farming family of Bonners?

Reverend Isaac Russell

I am trying to trace the history of Rev. Isaac Russell who was Master of Spilsby Grammar School and Vicar of Stickford in the first half of the 19th century. He was my the brother of my 4x Great Grandfather.

I was in the Spilsby area in September but hadn't realised that there is a window in St. James Church dedicated to him and his son Rev John Russell. I hope to return to Spilsby to see the window later this year or next.

I was wondering if you had any information about the window or a picture of it.

Isaac was a very interesting person and I have found a number of documents about him and written by him. I hope you can add to the picture.

Waite Family

My great grandmother was called Marion Waite, she lived in Spilsby (at one point at 10 Queen Street, Lindum House), she was born in 1884, married Henry Alexander Bowman in 1902 at Boston (he was a retired major - Royal Artillery).  Marion Waite apparently became pregnant by someone named as "The Hon. Aubrey Francis" while she was married to him, although his name is written on his birth certificate (his occupation is at that time given as 3rd mate on a (looks like 'steamer').

Marion Waite was apparently escorted by her governess to Warrington where my grandpa was born and went back to Spilsby after she had had him and left him with a family called Bracegirdle who brought him up.

Is there any possibility you could supply any more info? (did Marion Waite marry again, did she have any more children?  Have you any idea who this mysterious "Aubrey Francis" could be? (did Sir Herbert Aubrey Francis Metcalfe ever visit Spilsby?).

My cousin has some letters in his possession which I had read years ago and from those letters and other sources we learnt that Marion's father had a grocers. I think it was called 'Waite and sons' and we believe there was a high class riding gear/hunting gear shop that was targeted at the aristocratic and very rich people which belonged to Marion's uncle and was next to the grocers.

I am currently researching my parent's family history. My father was Robert Parker (1917-1964) and his family farmed in Toynton for most of the 20th century. But my main focus at present is on my mother - Eva Parker (nee Blackbourn) who worked for Dr. John Francis walker at Avenue House in the late 1930's.

Are there any documents relating to this man, particularly details/photos of his staff in the 1930's?

Parker Family - Message 1

My mother worked for Dr John Francis Walker for several years from about 1937 and lodged with him at The Avenue , Spilsby. Her name was Eva Blackbourn. I believe she nursed him through ill health - do you know of any records of his staff which could confirm this ?

I know he had an important position in the village - as chief medical officer etc, but just wondered if there is  any relevant info about him or photos from this period that are available to purchase.

I am puzzled by the fact that in the 1938 electoral roll , his house is known as Eresby Hall and yet he was living at The Avenue Spilsby .From my research I believe the proper Eresby Hall had been burnt down. Are there any photos of his house?

Just a point of interest - My father  - Bob (Robert ) also originated from this area (born 1917). He was a member of the Parker family who resided in Old Bolingbroke and latterly in Toynton. There may be a faint chance a few of your members may have known this family.

Robinson Family

I'm trying to get some more information on some of my ancestors who were residents of Spilsby. I believe the family came from Yorkshire and that they were corn merchants

Benjamin Robinson was born/christened in Spilsby on 20/8/1740. He married Ann Reynolds on 23/6/1763.

They had a son, Benjamin b/c in Spilsby on 22/4/1767. He married Ann.

They had ten children of whom eight survived childhood.

The eldest son was Benjamin b. 19/8/1825 - he was married on 25/12/1847. His wife died in childbirth (with the baby). He married again in 1852.

(One of the children who went to Australia was Charles, born 24/12/1841 - my great-grandfather)

In the early 1850s Ann left her husband and voyaged to Australia with all the children except Benjamin. I assume he stayed behind with his new wife and to look after the family business)

The census of 1881 shows this Benjamin living in High Street, Spilsby with:-
Eliza (wife)  b. 1823  Marshland Smeath Norfolk
Harry (Son) b 1859  - Corn Merchant’s assistant
Benjamin (son) b 1863 – scholar
Betsy Winn (servant) age 22

I have details of the relatives of the family that moved to Australia, but I'm interested to find more about the family/descendants of the latter Benjamin Robinson as well as any information on antecedents of the first Benjamin Robinson.
